PTC to study requiring liability insurance for golf cart owners

A special committee will be appointed to investigate whether Peachtree City should require golf cart owners to carry liability insurance on their carts. At its regular meeting Thursday night, the City Council agreed the matter should be studied by a committee before council makes a decision. But several council members said they were in favor of such a requirement. Though many residents think their golf carts are covered for accidents through their homeowners insurance policies, that's usually not the case, said Councilman Dan Tennant. "If you can afford to have a golf cart, you can afford to have liability insurance," said resident Kathleen Cheney, who said the insurance came in handy when a child was injured by her parked cart that resulted in a $20,000 bill just for emergency transportation. Resident Debbie Condon said liability insurance on her cart helped when a 10-year-old fell out of her golf cart while her husband was driving. The $10-per-year policy Condon had at the time covered the medical bills, she said. "It was the best $10 we spent," Condon said. "It was well worth it." Resident Robert Brown said he felt requiring golf cart owners to have liability insurance would amount to another tax. "Is this a solution looking for a problem?" Brown said.
