First West Nile case in Fayette confirmed

Fayette County Health Department officials confirmed Tuesday the first case of West Nile Virus in the county.

Officials said a crow found off Dividend Drive in Peachtree City in August tested positive for the virus.

The department also confirmed that a 77-year-old man who was hospitalized in August with virus-like symptoms and later died tested positive for the virus.

As cooler temperatures move into the area, mosquito activity should decrease and the threat of the virus will dissipate.

But Health Department officials said they will continue to monitor the situation and evaluate all reports of dead birds in the county.

While previously only collecting crows, bluejays and raptors for testing, the department said it will evaluate any dead bird that show no visible evidence of trauma for West Nile Virus testing.
