Local teams win in first round of area softball tournament

The opening round of the area 4-AAAAA softball tournament went off without a hitch and the top three seeded teams, Fayette County, Starr's Mill and McIntosh, won with few problems.

Fayette County defeated Carver, Columbus 15-0. Stephanie Phillips pitched a perfect game and struck out five batters. Some of the offense for the Lady Tigers came from Alison Horne, Megan Nichols, and Paige and Stephanie Phillips, each of whom had an RBI in the win.

Starr's Mill got a perfect game from their pitcher as well. Rebecca Guertin struck out 12 batters as Starr's Mill marched to a 10-0 win over Riverdale. Lynsey Tedford produced almost half of the offense with four RBIs.

McIntosh got an 8-1 win over Lovejoy and pitcher Lily Yarbrough got the win, givin up two hits and striking out five batters. Renae Clarke hit a two run homerun and drove in another run later.

The tournament was postoned on Tuesday due to bad weather but continued on Wednesday.
