Region 4-AAAAA lead up or grabs tonight

Things are getting interesting in high school football.

Region 4-AAAAA has a three-way tie for first place between East Coweta, Starr's Mill and Newnan with 3-1 records, with Lovejoy and Riverdale right behind them at 2-1. To make matters even more interesting, East Coweta plays at Lovejoy, Starr's Mill hosts Newnan and Riverdale plays at McIntosh. By Saturday morning some teams will be in the driver's seat, while others will have a tough road to making the playoffs.

One game from Region 4-AAAAA was played last night after the paper went to press. Fayette County (2-5) traveled to Columbus Memorial Stadium to take on Carver, Columbus (3-3). The Tigers got their second win last week by defeating McIntosh 23-14, while Carver lost a close game to Lovejoy 14-13.

Fayette should have confidence going into this game, especially with Steven West back and scoring touchdowns for the Tigers. West had two touchdowns last week against the Chiefs. To see results for this game, visit www.thecitizennews.com this morning.

East Coweta (3-4) started the season with three straight losses, since then the Indians have gone 3-1. Last week they gave the Starr's Mill Panthers their first region loss by scoring two late touchdowns. Tonight they travel to Twelve Oaks Stadium in Hampton to meet a Lovejoy (4-2) team that got beat in the closing minutes against Starr's Mill two weeks ago and squeaked out a victory last week against Carver. This may be a case of two teams going in two different directions.

Starr's Mill (5-2) will try to get back to their winning ways tonight when they host Newnan (4-3). The Panthers missed two field goals in the fourth quarter last week and saw East Coweta score twice in four minutes. They will attempt to play a more solid fourth quarter tonight to stay in first place in the region.

Newnan has lost two games in a row and has only scored 13 points in the two losses. The Cougars were missing their starting quarterback and wide receiver on offense last week and both hope to return tonight, along with two defensive starters. In their previous two meetings Starr's Mill has won both games by a slim margin, so this could be a very close game.

McIntosh (1-6) will play its final home game of the season tonight when they host Riverdale (4-1). The Chiefs made some early mistakes in last week's game against Fayette County and found themselves down early. To beat Riverdale, there can be no mistakes and the Chiefs will have to have luck pounding the ball with their running game and control the clock. Things don't get any easier for McIntosh in the final two weeks of the season when they play Starr's Mill and Lovejoy on the road.

Sandy Creek (3-2) fell behind early in last week's loss to Douglas County. They hope to put that behind them with a game against North Clayton (1-4) at Tara Sadium in Jonesboro. Sandy Creek got touchdowns from Calvn Johnson and Jamal Rome last week and saw Philip Hyde rush for over 100 yards. If those three are on, expect the Patriots to roll. North Clayton has lost three games in a row, but they are coming off a week off and their last loss was a close on to Forest Park.

Landmark Christian (5-0) comes off a bye week to host Heard County (5-0). This game could determine the region champion. Landmark has won with a solid defense that can produce key turnovers and a balanced offense with several weapons, including Sean Hill, who had three touchdowns in their last win. Heard County has only given up 35 points all year so the War Eale offense must find a way to beat the Heard County defense to stay perfect this season.

Our Lady of Mercy (2-4) got their second win of the season last week by beating Walker 27-7. Tonight they travel to take on Mt. Zion, Carroll (1-4). The Bobcats had a number of their starters back last week and they performed very well. Ralph Woolfolk ran for a touchdown, passed for two touchdowns, while Sam Etuk and Josh Flores each had an interception. The Eagles only win came against Walker, 38-7, but they have shown they can put up points, having scored 100 points already this season.

All kickoffs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
