Harvest Festival at Callaway Gardens puts visitors into spirit of fall

Decorated with the beauty of fall, Callaway will celebrate the season with the second annual Harvest Festival within Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden. The festival, which runs the first three weekends of October, will offer guests activities reminiscent of an old-fashioned Fall festival.

What says Fall festival better than hayrides? Hayrides will be offered for $2 per person and are a perfect way to get in the spirit of the harvest season. The hayrides will take guests around the three-mile Robin Lake Circle and will be decorated with hay bale artwork. Children will also be delighted as they find their way through a maze created by tall corn plants, or a hay bale maze for younger children. Additional activities will include storytelling (on the half-hour between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.), musical entertainment and artisans, such as a blacksmith, gourd crafter and potter, creating and selling their wares.

Unique birdhouses made with recycled objects and Callaway harvest floral arrangements also will be on display and for sale. Throughout the vegetable garden children will enjoy seeing scarecrow scenes created from storybook themes. Families will have a great time creating funny, whimsical scarecrows for a fee of $1 per scarecrow. They will also get to take home their scarecrow's head as a souvenir. In the Autumn Pot'em area, children will plant parsley and take it home for nurturing. Families will also enjoy earning their veggie detective badges as they explore the garden as part of the Vegetable Garden scavenger hunt.

Everyone will learn something new and fun at the Discovery Tables with displays including a bee-keeping exhibit showcasing the unique honey-making skills of bees. Additional tables will feature gourds, pumpkins, peppers and broomcorn. Guests will take home great ideas for their jack-o-lantern from the pumpkin decorating demonstrations. For those getting into the spirit of the season, pumpkins will be available for purchase to take home and, at no additional charge, guests can decorate them on site with a pattern provided or by free hand.

Food themed for the event will be available for sale, as well as the opportunity to make and eat S'Mores.

Guests of all ages will enjoy these activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Callaway is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year Callaway celebrates 50 years of providing "a place of beauty, relaxation, inspiration and a better understanding of the living world" for millions of visitors. Callaway is committed to its mission of environmental education and land stewardship for the future.

Callaway is in Pine Mountain, 60 minutes southwest of Atlanta and 30 minutes north of Columbus.
