Theatre season at CCSU opens with Bradbury musical

Clayton College and State University opens Clayton State Theater's 31st season this week by showcasing the professional premiere of "The Day It Rained Forever," a musical by Ray Bradbury and William Whitefield.

According to the theater's founder, Dr. Larry Corse, one of Clayton State's tenured English professors and the theater's artistic director since its founding in 1971, this will be one of the highlights in the history of the Clayton State Theater.

The original short story was adapted to music by Whitefield some 10 years ago when, as a student at Pepperdine University, he approached Bradbury for permission to compose the musical. Not only did Bradbury agree, but he did the adaptation as well, writing the book and the lyrics for the production.

Whitefield, a conductor, actor and composer in New York, will be conducting the all-professional cast and orchestra for this motivating and magical musical that will run from Oct. 2-5 in the Clayton State Theater, room 132 in the University's Arts & Sciences Building. Admission is $12.

Other productions scheduled for this season include: Comedy Improv from Dad's Garage, a world-renowned improvisational group graciously appearing by command performance Oct. 13; "Haunted Lives," by author John Pielmiere, Oct. 24-27 and Oct. 30-31, and "Othello," by William Shakespeare, Dec. 5-7 and Dec. 12-14, which will conclude the 2002 calendar.

Beginning in January, the bill includes: "A Magical Extravaganza," a free performance featuring Clayton State professor of chemistry Dr. James Braun, Jan. 17-18; "Love Cabaret," an evening of poetry and music, featuring poetry by Corse and Dr. Greg Hampikian, and music by Andy Ditzler and Adodi Muse, Feb. 14-15; "Six Characters in Search of an Author," by Luigi Pirandello, Mar. 20-22 and Mar. 27-29; "Oleana," by David Mamet, Apr. 3-5; and "Short, Short, Really Short Redux," a return of last season's skits, sketches and other foolishness Apr. 25-26.

All performances will be at 8 p.m. in the Clayton State Theater. Admission, except where noted otherwise, is $8 for the general public, $4 for students and seniors. For more information, please visit www.claytonstatetheater.org.
