Patriots, Panthers and OLM Bobcats get wins in fifth week

Sandy Creek came off its second bye week in a month last Friday and blew out the Chapel Hill Panthers 41-6.

The Patriots jumped on Chapel Hill a little more than two minutes into the first quarter when Calvin Johnson caught one of his two touchdown receptions. Johnson caught touchdown passes from Dusty Bennett and Ben McKinnon and had four receptions for 148 yards.

Sandy Creek's second touchdown came three and a half minutes later when Phillip Hyde ran 45 yards for a touchdown. Hyde scored another touchdown with 3:43 left in the half and a mishandled snap on the extra point made the score 27-0. Sophomore Michael Lockett provided a spark on defense sacking the Panther quarterback twice with monster sacks.

The Patriots added one more touchdown before the half when Jamal Lore ran the ball in from the one yard line. They got another touchdown in the second half and the defense kept Chapel Hill off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter. Sandy Creek (2-1) will play at Lithia Springs (1-2) on Friday. Lithia Springs got their first win last Friday by defeating Alexander 37-18.

Starr's Mill improved to 4-1 last Friday by defeating Carver, Columbus 28-12. The Panthers got two touchdowns from Johnny Edwards and touchdown runs from Chris Strauch and Deante Battle to give the Panthers their third win in a row. The Panthers now start a three game series against some of the region's tough competition starting with Lovejoy (3-1) on Friday and followed by East Coweta and Newnan respectively.

Our Lady of Mercy got its first win of the season last week by beating Whitefield Academy 7-3. Sam Etuk ran nine yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to give the Bobcats the victory. Etuk rushed for 130 yards on the evening. The defense was led by senior Terrell Shelton who had eight tackles and two assists and Matt Gill who had four tackles for losses.

"I am really pleased with the team's effort," said Coach Alan Gordon. "We put four quarters together in our first region game." Gordon also commended the play of backup quarterback Josh Flores who is the team's leading receiver. Flores also punted, kicked off, kicked the extra point and had an interception in the win. Senior Quentin Jones had a good game as well with a blocked put and two solo tackles and two assists. Our Lady of Mercy (1-3) wil play at Blessed Trinity (2-2) on Friday.

Fayette County (1-4) lost another close game after giving up a lot of points early to East Coweta last week. The Tigers found themselves down 21-0 early and rallied to close the gap to 21-14 at the half. They outscored the Indians 14-13 in the second half but found themselves on the shrt end of the stick losing 34-28. Quarterback Jeff Crisp passed for 220 yards and three touchdowns to Josh Davis. The Tigers host Creekside (3-1) on Friday, while East Coweta faces a tough regional opponent in Riverdale (2-1).

McIntosh traveled to take on Newnan last Friday and lost 33-7. The Chiefs (1-4) got a one yard touchdown run from Nick Achor in the second quarter to make the score 14-7 at the half. unfortunately, McIntosh fumbled and had a punt blocked. Both miscues led to touchdowns for Newnan. The Chiefs will try to avoid those types of errors on Friday night when they host Carver, Columbus in their hoecoming game. Carver has lost two games in a row.

Landmark Christian (4-0) had a bye last week and looks to stay perfect when they travel to Grady Stadium in Atlanta to take on Carver, Atlanta (0-3).
