Question for F'ville southside development: 'Why,' not 'How'

With all the plans in the works for Fayetteville's south side, I feel the question should not be how should it be developed, but rather why?

Why do developers feel we need more businesses in the area (we currently have an abundance of stores, gas stations, restaurants, etc.) and why is it felt we need more houses (just look at all the "for sale" signs in the yards of preexisting homes)?

Why do hundreds of acres of woodland and natural habitat need to be destroyed? The leveling of all this forest will not only bring us poor air quality, but more importantly it will destroy the home of the wildlife population who live there.

The destruction of trees, natural areas, and animals will be final. Once gone, they cannot be brought back, no matter how nice the stores or houses seem which developers plan to build on the site.

I know the desire for money is the bottom line in this issue (perhaps that's the real reason why), but I hope development will be a long time coming.
