Former student helps with playground improvements

A former Hood Avenue Primary student has returned to his old school to make improvements to its playground.

Andrew McEwen, now a junior at Fayette County High School and an Eagle Scout, selected Hood Avenue's playground as one of his community service projects that he will be completing as he works toward earning his Eagle Scout Badge.

McEwen began scouting when he was in the first grade at the school so choosing to help out where his career as a scout started seemed like a natural choice.

"It has been really great to come back here and help with the playground. I have really enjoyed this project," he said.

McEwen has spent weeks sanding splinters off of wooden seats and replacing old nails that had worked loose as well as cleaning up Big Foot Trail, an outdoor classroom behind the school.

"Andrew has just done a jam-up job and I am very pleased with his work," said Principal Dianne Teer. "He is a fine young man."

Not only is Teer happy with the playground improvements, but so are the school's students.
