Villages Amphitheater set to open Saturday with sounds from Motown By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
The Villages Amphitheater in Fayetteville will open in style Saturday night as Dennis Edwards and The Temptation Review will perform their numerous Motown hits. The amphitheater is a facility with a tiered seating area that can hold approximately 1,100 people and a lawn seating area. The venue is owned by the Fayetteville Downtown Development Authority and is overseen by Main Street Fayetteville. It will be used for a small series of concerts each year as well as for community and school events. Parking will be in the Fayette County High School parking lots and, though beer and wine will be permitted in the venue, open containers and smoking will not be allowed in the parking lot. Saturday's concert promises to be a very special event. Our very own "Survivor," Superior Court Judge Paschal "Pappy" English, will be the guest emcee for the show. The Sock Hops, a group of five guys playing hits from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, will open the show at 7 p.m. and a dedication ceremony, featuring the unveiling of the new Fayetteville city flag, will take place at 7:45 p.m. At 8 p.m. the main attraction will take the stage. Dennis Edwards joined The Temptations in 1968 and helped lead the group to their biggest successes. After he joined the group they won their first ever Grammy award and led them to six more nomiantions and five more awards as well as 14 Gold albums. Edwards was the lead singer as they recorded a number of number one hits including "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," "Can't Get Next to You," "Memories," "Cloud Nine" and more.
