Starr's Mill and Landmark get big wins in fourth week
By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
In the fourth week of the high school football season, Starr's Mill found a way to continue their dominance over Riverdale and Landmark Christian continued to put up lots of points, while McIntosh fell to East Coweta and Fayette County got dominated by Lovejoy. Starr's Mill (3-1) went to overtime against Riverdale and stopped them from scoring as time expired to win the game, 27-26. Deante Battle and Chris Strauch both had two touchdowns for the Panthers. Starr's Mill will travel to Carver, Columbus (2-1) this Friday night. Landmark Christian (4-0) had a huge second quarter last Friday night, scoring 28 points, on their way to a 45-21 win over Jefferson. Sean Hill had three touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and one touchdown reception, while Dylan Hanes rushed for another two touchdowns. Quarterback Alex Mortensen threw for 224 yards and a touchdown an Wren Gibby recovered a fumble and ran it back 70 yards for a touchdown. The War Eagles are off to an incredible start. They have scored 167 points so far this season and have averaged 44.1 points per game. Their defense has been stingy, only allowing 40 points this season. Landmark Christian, currently ranked eighth in Class A, has a week off before playing Carver, Atlanta at Grady Stadium. McIntosh had East Coweta playing their type of game for three quarters. The Chiefs (1-3) trailed the Indians 14-7 at the end of the third quarter and would have had the score tied had an first half drive not stalled due to a turnover in the red zone. Nick Achor and Cortez Phillips had little trouble running the ball against East Coweta, often going right up the middle, sustaining long drives and getting first downs. They had 248 yards of rushing. McIntosh got the ball to start the third quarter and had a nine minute drive capped off by a three yard run from quarterback Chip Jett. They made East Coweta punt the ball on their next possession but the ball touched Cameron Hall and the Indians recovered the ball as the third quarter ended. Things fell apart in the fourth quarter. East Coweta scored on a 37 yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter. McIntosh fumbled on the first play of their next drive and the Indians scored on a seven yard touchdown pass on their next drive to give them a 28-7 lead and victory. Coach Butch Prosser cited good play from the offensive line, including Sean Digby, Patrick Griffith, Joe Maddox, Robert Leon and Brian Kelch, as well as Devin Lemons on defense. Lemons had eight tackles and five assists. The Chiefs will travel this Friday to take on the Newnan Cougars (3-1). Fayette County coach Jim Lindsey knew he'd be facing a talented team in the Lovejoy Wildcats on Friday. He was hoping however that his team would avoid getting behind early, as they have in several games this year. This was not to be. The Wildcats put up 413 yards of total offense on Fayette County and scored 22 points in the first quarter, including two touchdowns in less than a minute. Lovejoy's defense also did a good job of keeping Fayette County off the board until the fourth quarter when Ryan mickey ran 24 yards for a touchdown. Fayette County (1-3) lost 55-7 and will travel to take on East Coweta(1-3) this Friday. Other games this week will include severalteams who were off last week. Sandy Creek (1-1) will host Chapel Hill (0-3), while Northgate (0-2) will play at Woodward Academy (1-2) and Our Lady of Mercy (0-3) will host Whitefield Academy (1-2).
