This is a big week for festivals. Tyrone will celebrate Founders Day all week, while the Shakerag and Old Town Sharpsburg festivals will take place this weekend. There will be lots of food to consume, lots of arts and crafts to peruse and lots of entertainment to enjoy.

Founders Day got underway last night with the carnival down at Shamrock Park. The carnival will be up through the end of the festival on Saturday night. The midway will be open from 5-11 p.m. each night through Friday and from 10 a.m.-11 p.m. on Saturday. For $15 an armband can be purchased good for unlimited rides. On Saturday, the armband can be used either from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. or from 6-11 p.m.

Other events during the Founders Day celebration are the Taste of Tyrone and Tyrone Star Search at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, an ice cream eating contest at 6:30 p.m. and a karaoke contest at 7:30 p.m. Saturday kicks off with a 5K road race, a one-mile fun walk and a one-mile fun run at 8 a.m. Arts and crafts exhibits and food vendors will be open from 9 a.m.-11 p.m. and the entertainment will run from 10 a.m.-11 p.m. There will be a parade at 2 p.m., Mike Rogers Band performing from 7-9:30 p.m., fireworks at 9:30 p.m. and Tommy Ray Gurley from 9:45-11 p.m.

During these events some of the local streets will be closed. Senoia Road, Castlewood Road, Briarwood Road, Palmetto Tyrone Road, and Arrowwood Road will be closed between 7:45 and 8:45 a.m. Senoia Road will be closed from 1:45-3 p.m. for the parade.

The Peachtree City Recreation Department is sponsoring the 26th Annual Shakerag Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22. Nestled in the pines on Shakerag Knoll, off McIntosh Trail, this festival offers free admission, food, entertainment, and children's activities in addition to a vast array of arts and crafts. Vendors come from Georgia and the entire southeastern region. Familiar country crafts, clothing, paintings, wood items, furniture, stained glass, jewelry and soft sculpture all blend to make a varied and creative show.

"Get started on Christmas shopping," says Susan Taylor, Event Coordinator. "There is something for everyone. Come enjoy our food, entertainment and wonderful wares."

This event will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from Noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Some familiar vendors will be returning and can be found at their usual site. New vendors will be introducing unusual arts and crafts for you to purchase. Children are always welcome and there is a special section "just for kids." Pony rides, moonwalk, games and other activities are located in the children's area.

Spend the weekend in rustic Fayette County leisurely shopping and enjoying our autumn celebration. For more information, call Susan Taylor at 770-631-2542.

Old Town Sharpsburg will have over 100 vendors at their festival this weekend. Among the many arts and crafts on sale at the festival will be whirligigs, sand art, puppets, seasonal crafts, handmade jewelry, handpoured candles, edible candy art and much more. Many local civic organizations will also be on hand running food booths that will feature kettle corn, smoked wings, BBQ ribs, gyros, shaved ice, Philly Cheesesteaks, fried green tomatoes and more.

Also present this weekend at Old Town Sharpsburg will be tree climbing instructor Abe Winters back for his 11th consecutive year. Winters will be climbing the famous 100-year-old oak tree. The Sons of the Confederate Veterans will also be at the festival signing people up and answering questions about confederate history, while the Ladies Auxiliary, the Order of Robert E. Lee, will have a breakfast both days at 8 a.m. On Sunday morning at 9 a.m. Turin Baptist Church will hold a non-denominational service.

The weekend will also include clogging, music and non-stop entertainment. What is new this year is that there will be no through traffic during the festival. The festival area will be a pedestrian zone from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. Those who need to pick up heavy objects will still be allowed to do so though.

As you can see, there will be plenty of good eating and good browsing going on this weekend at the many festivals in the area.
