Sons of American Revolution honors one of its own
By CAROLYN
CARY
The Cliftondale community, just north of Fairburn, hosted a special ceremony to honor one of its heroes, William Sewell. Sewell was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and is buried in the old Enon cemetery, now known as the Bethel cemetery. He was born about 1755 in Maryland and was one of 13 children of Samuel Sewell Sr. The family moved to Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina about 1769. His father and three brothers are listed on the "Roster of North Carolina Revolutionary Soldiers." William and Joshua Sewell are also listed in the "Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia." Most all of the children of Samuel moved to Georgia by 1784 through 1805. He was in Old Campbell County, now Fulton County, when he died on May 2, 1836. The gravesite was honored in a ceremony headed by the Piedmont Chapter, Georgia Society, sons of the American Revolution. Nearly 40 descendants came from seven states to be a part of the ceremony. Each laid a sprig of cedar on their ancestor's gravesite.
