CCSU professor to sign book about Candler
Clayton State professor Dr. Kathryn Kemp doesn't just teach history, she writes it. A signing for her book "God's Capitalist: Asa Candler of Coca-Cola" will take place Monday, Sept. 16, at noon in the Clayton State bookstore, located in the University's Student Center. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the signing. Though Candler's renown is generally synonymous with his role in founding Coca-Cola, "God's Capitalist" takes a deeper drink into the life and morals of Candler. From his unyielding principles of Biblical stewardship to his $1 million check written to finance the establishment of Emory University, Kemp writes in the footsteps of one of the richest men in the early 20th Century South. "'God's Capitalist' is an examination of the life of a very successful entrepreneur who saw his personal wealth as a divine trust to be used to the benefit of humanity," reviews B. F. Edmonds of the South Carolina "McCormick Messenger." Kemp teaches U.S. history, minorities in history and ancient history at Clayton State. She received both her B.G.S. (1981) and her M.A. (1983) from the University of New Orleans, and earned her Ph.D. in U.S. Southern History (1993) from Georgia State University. In addition to "God's Capitalist," Kemp has also written documentary histories for the University of New Orleans history archaeology lab and has served as a manuscript archivist at the Atlanta History Center. "God's Capitalist: Asa Candler of Coca-Cola" is a southern history biography published by Mercer University Press, and may be ordered through Mercer at mupressorders@mercer.edu |
