Spivey Hall announces season filled with classical music and classic guests By MICHAEL

The 2002-2003 season at Spivey Hall starts this weekend with a concert from baritone Rodney Gilfrey on Saturday, Sept. 14. He is just one of many stars of classical music and opera who will take the stage at one of the premiere venues in the state over the next year. Following Gilfrey's concert will be the harpsichord duo of Ton Koopman and Tini Mathot performing "Art of the Fugue" on Sunday, Sept. 15. The United States Army Ground Forces Wind Quintet will perform a free concert on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. and the following weekend's concerts will feature the Eroica Trio on Friday, Sept. 27 and Jeanine and Alan Morrison playing piano and organ on Sunday, Sept. 29. October will feature jazz musicians Charlie Haden and Kenny Barron on Saturday, Oct. 12, a free concert from soprano Mary Hoover and pianist Jose Melendez on Tuesday, Oct. 15, mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieverson on Saturday, Oct. 26, guitarist John Williams and Friends on Sunday, Oct. 27 and pianist Mitsuko Uchida and violinist Mark Steinberg on Thursday, Oct. 31. In November, the Clayton College and University New Music Ensemble will perform free concerts late in the month while the Georgia State University Singers will perform Saturday, Nov. 2. Other artists performing will be The Georgian Chamber Players, the Monty Alexander Tri, the Brentano String Quartet, harpist Dan Yu and Collegium Vocale. December will feature a number of holiday concerts including performances from the Spivey Hall Children's Choir as well as the popular Big Band Christmas with the William Noll Orchestra. January will feature a taste of everything from the Lyra String Quartet on Sunday, Jan. 12 to the Bonnie Rideout Scottish Trio with Jerry Sullivan on Saturday, Jan. 25. Chanticleer will return in January with a concert on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The Clayton College and State University Opera will take place Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21 and 22. Other performers in February include saxophonist Wiliam Graves, the Jimmy McGriff Quartet, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and guitarist Sharon Isbin. March will feature the Metropolitan Opera Auditions for the Southeast Region on Sunday, March 2, Anuna in the annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration concert on Friday, March 14, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Georgian Chamber Players, as well as the Georgia Tech Chorale. In April, the Atlanta Boy Choir kicks things off with a concert on Sunday, April 6 and will be followed by the Clayton College and State University Jazz Combo on April 9, their collegiate chorale on April 22 and their big band on April 28 and their new music ensemble on April 29 Pianist Murray Perahia will perform on April 25. The season wraps up in May with concerts from Atlanta Sacred Chorale, The Georgian Chamber Players, the Spivey Hall Young Artists and the Spivey Hall Children's Choir.
