The biggest game around the county last Friday night was Fayette County at Sandy Creek. It was the first time the two teams had met on the gridiron but hopefully it will not be the last. The two teams battled back and forth for four quarters and Fayette County emerged victorious with a score of 39-26. The Tigers took a 7-0 lead when Steven West caught a touchdown pass from Hunter Rozakos. Sandy Creek answered back with a 67-yard touchdown reception from Calvin Johnson. Fayette County's David Roberson ran back the kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter had a scary sight as Sandy Creek defender Stephen Lawson went down with what was called a stinger. He went to the hospital that evening for further observation. Fayette County got a field goal to make the score 17-7. Sandy Creek had a Phillip Hyde touchdown called back due to a penalty and a field goal attempt go wide left to keep the score the same at the half. In the second half, Fayette County quarterback Jeff Crisp connected with Steven West who ran 70 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 24-7 lead. Sandy Creek came storming back with a 77-yard touchdown run from Hyde. Hyde, who finished with 220 yards rushing, 186 of which came in the second half, ran for 56 yards on Creek's next possession, setting up a five-yard touchdown reception for Johnson. Fayette County held a 24-20 edge going into the fourth quarter but after Patriot defender Brett McCullough recovered a fumble, Hyde had a 33-yard touchdown run. Sandy Creek missed the extra point attempt and had a 26-24 lead. Roberson ran back his second kickoff for a touchdown and their two point attempt was good, giving the Tigers a 32-26 lead. The Tigers then ran the ball, wearing time off the clock and Josh Davis scored with a five yard touchdown run to give the Tigers the win. Fayette County (1-1) hosts Newnan this Friday, while Sandy Creek (0-1) plays at Alexander. In other games last Friday, Landmark Christian (2-0) defeated Decatur, 36-7 thanks to touchdowns from an interception by Miles King and a fumble recovery from Wren Gibby as well as a safety by Nick Taussig. Starr's Mill lost to Cherokee by a score of 40-20, despite touchdowns from Chris Strauch and Johnny Edwards and two field goals from Chris James. Our Lady of Mercy (0-2) lost to Aquinas 22-13. Ralph Woolfolk threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Jones and then ran back an interception for a touchdown for the Bobcats but a fumble on a punt return set up Aquinas' final touchdown to take the lead. McIntosh (1-1) lost to Upson-Lee 53-7, while East Coweta (0-2) lost to Douglass, Atlanta 42-21. This week, Landmark will play at Brookstone, Starr's Mill will play at Spalding, Our Lady of Mercy will play at Temple, McIntosh will play at Lowndes and East Coweta will play at Cherokee. All kickoffs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
