Newnan LDS church plans Family Preparedness Fair September 28

The Newnan Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) will have a Family Preparedness Fair Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Newnan Chapel, 821 Old Atlanta Hwy., in Newnan. The event is free and open to the public.

The Family Preparedness Fair is designed to help families prepare for a variety of emergency situations.

"After an emergency situation occurs, it's simply too late to start preparing for the worst its already happened," a spokesperson said. "Whether you might find yourself in the dark during an electrical storm, or become the victim of corporate downsizing, there is always something you can do in advance to prepare."

A wide variety of classes, live demonstrations, and tasting tables will fill the building with information on food storage, alternative power sources, 72-hour emergency kits, purifying and storing water, gardening, weather alert communications and financial planning.

Live demonstrations will include dry pack canning, grinding grains, sewing for children, basic first aid and emergency car repair.

A bees and bugs exhibit, wherein bees will be making honey in glass jars, should be a big hit with the kids, as well as with parents.

"We teach self-reliance as a principle of life ... that we ought to provide for ourselves and take care of our own needs," says Gordon B. Hinckley, president of the LDS Church." And so, we encourage our people to have something ... to plan ahead, to keep food on hand, to establish a savings account, against a rainy day."

For information on the Family Preparedness Fair, contact Newnan Ward Food Storage Coordinator Millie Meyer, 770-964-4715.
