Let's find creative ways to say thanks to firefighters

For days after I read John Munford's article "Peachtree City Short of Fire Volunteers" (The Citizen, July 3, 2002) I was haunted by it. Reality demanded I accept the fact that, except for pumpkin buying, I do nothing to acknowledge the daily services and protection these volunteer firefighters consistently provide.

Actually they do much more for me than just "firefighting"! Several of Peachtree City's firemen-involved events that my grandchildren and I enjoy came to mind particularly the Fourth of July festivities and the Air Show.

On the Fourth these volunteer firefighters spend long hours preparing for and participating in the parade, the Jaws of Life demo, and the water battle. For the Air Show the volunteer crews work the Friday before the Air Show preparing the site and then two 12-hour days both Saturday and Sunday.

My becoming a volunteer firefighter at age 70 is certainly not practical! I did, however, find other ways I can show my appreciation.

May I now urge others, both organizations and individuals, to show theirs? For the Air Show this weekend dozens of creative ideas come to mind: Cases of Gatorade, ice to keep their drinks cold, boxes of cookies, snacks for Saturday and Sunday morning break, fruit to break up their long afternoons. The possibilities go on and on.

If each concession booth, Scout troop, or individual citizen would do just one thing, what a serendipitous "thank you" we could extend!
