The second week of the high school football season is here and there are a number of exciting games taking place tonight.

The biggest local matchup is Fayette County at Sandy Creek. The Patriots had a bye week last week and are looking to start the 2002 season with a win. Fayette County lost to Douglas County 38-21 last week but showed some positive things. The Tigers need to find a way to get past the Sandy Creek defense and the Patriots must find a way to shut down Fayette County's offense. This will be the first time these two teams have met during the regular season and it should be a good one.

Starr's Mill got a 24-7 win against Dacula in the Corky Kell Kickoff Classic last Saturday in the Georgia Dome. The Panthers will host the Cherokee Warriors tonight and will try to slow down an offense that scored 57 points against Northview last week. Starr's Mill saw lots of good things as they got their first win in the Dome including a solid rushing attack from several players.

East Coweta lost to top ranked Parkview 21-0 in the Corky Kell Kickoff Classic last Saturday night but are still a talented and potent team. The Indian defense held Parkview to eight points through three quarters and their offense had several opportunities to score that were thwarted due to penalties. This week East Coweta will host Douglass, Atlanta, a team from 7-AAAAA, which tied Washington 21-21 last week.

Landmark Christian also started their season with a win last week by defeating Cross Keys 49-12. The War Eagles were efficient on offense scoring 21 points in a row and proving they have many weapons on offense including Eric Worrell, who scored three touchdowns and quarterback Alex Mortensen, who threw four touchdown passes. This week Landmark hosts Decatur, which lost to Wesleyan, 33-0.

McIntosh High School scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter last week to defeat Eagle's Landing 24-17. The Chiefs got big plays from both their offense and defense and will need to turn in a similar performance when they travel to take on Upson Lee tonight. Upson Lee had a bye week last week but finished last season with an overall record of 7-3.

Our Lady of Mercy started their first full varsity season last week with a 44-0 loss to Pacelli Catholic. The Bobcats are hoping for a better result tonight when they host Aquinas, which lost to Harlem, 24-0 last week. Newnan handily defeated Northgate 56-6 last week. This week, Newnan will host Carrollton, which had a bye last week, and Northgate will host North Clayton, which lost to Riverdale 35-6.

All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. kickoffs.
