Several football teams start season with a win

The high school football season started last Friday. Some teams got off to a great start, while others were hoping for a better result. McIntosh High School hosted the Eagle's Landing Golden Eagles at Sandy Creek High School last Friday and won 24-17. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie by the end of the first quarter and McIntosh started the scoring when Cortez Phillips coughed up the ball and teammate Cameron Hall caught it and ran it over 80 yards for a touchdown. Eagle's Landing scored on its next drive and kicked a field goal at the end of the first half to go into the locker rooms up 10-7. McIntosh received the ball at the beginning of the third quarter but couldn't get a drive going. Eagle's Landing capitalized by scoring with a 79-yard touchdown run. Still trailing 17-7 going into the fourth quarter, McIntosh was picked up by an interception by Brendan Hall and a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Nick Achor. The Chief defense forced Eagle's Landing to punt and senior Michael Condon caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chip Jett to give the Chiefs the lead. Senior Robert Huefner kicked a field goal with just under 50 seconds to go to give McIntosh the 24-17 win. Up next for the Chiefs is Upson-Lee, which had a bye week last week. In other games, Starr's Mill got a 24-7 win over Dacula in the Corky Kell Kickoff Classic Saturday. The Panthers had enormous offensive output from Deante Battle, who had two touchdowns and over 80 total yards; Chris Strauch, who had 111 yards; and Johnny Edwards, who had 59 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Patrick Mullinix spread the ball out well as the Panthers had over 150 yards rushing. Kellan Strain made an interception in the fourth quarter to put a stop to a Dacula drive. Starr's Mill will host Cherokee, a team from 6-AAAAA, Friday night. Cherokee defeated Northview 57-0 last Friday night. Landmark Christian School also started the season with a win by defeating Cross Keys 49-12. The War Eagles started the game by scoring 21 points in a row. Quarterback Alex Mortensen threw two touchdown passes to Jeff Dercola and four touchdown passes in all, while Eric Worrell scored three touchdowns. Landmark will hope their offense stays hot this week as they host Decatur Friday night. Decatur lost to Wesleyan 33-0 last Friday. Fayette County had a 21-14 lead over Douglas County at the half of their game last Friday night but the Douglas County defense shut them down in the second half and scored 24 unanswered points to win 38-21. Scoring touchdowns for the Tigers were Steven West, Josh Davis and Jeff Crisp. Crisp had over 200 yards passing, Davis had over 150 yards rushing and West had close to 100 yards receiving. Coach jim Lindsey also cited good defensive play from Ade Osilaja and Brandon Truesdale. Fayette County will play at Sandy Creek this Friday night. The Patriots had a bye last week and are looking to start their season with a win. Sandy Creek has a good offense led by quarterback Dusty Bennett. Bennett has weapons in Phillip Hyde, Calvin Johnson, Will Judson, Brian Brown and Eddie Rush but the Patriots also have a defense that can be stifling and can produce turnovers. Tiger coach Jim Lindsey is looking forward to the game but must find a way to get by a defense he calls "impressive." Our Lady of Mercy faced Pacelli Catholic last Friday and lost 48-0. The Bobcats will host Aquinas this Friday. Aquinas lost to Harlem 24-0 last week. East Coweta, which lost to Parkview in the Corky kell Kickoff Classic, will host Douglass of Atlanta this Friday, while Newnan, who defeated Northgate, will host Carrollton and Northgate will host North Clayton. All games scheduled for Friday will start at 7:30 p.m.
