Christ the King will celebrate sixth anniversary this Sunday The congregation of Christ the King Charismatic Episcopal Church will observe their sixth anniversary Sunday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m., with the Right Rev. Charles W. Jones, Bishop of Alabama, service as guest preacher and celebrant. Christ the King began in a living room in Sharpsburg in the late summer of 1996 and, since September of that year, has been worshiping in the chapel of Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in Peachtree City. Beginning with 19 people, the church has grown to a constituency, of just over 200. Since the beginning of the church, more than 100 have been baptized, a sister church has been planted in Hogansville, five men have been ordained to the priesthood, three others have been ordained to the diaconate (with four more to be ordained in November) and two women have received Commissioned Minister status. Nearly two dozen church members have been trained as Eucharistic Ministers or as Licensed Liturgical Ministers, and the church has sponsored a number of medical mission trips to Kenya and Uganda. The church's worship ministry has been asked to provide music at both diocesan and provincial convocations. In 2000, the congregation purchased 11.5 acres of land on Ga. Hwy. 34 in Coweta County and a new sanctuary is scheduled for completion in October or November. The congregation offers a worship service that is a blend of evangelical, sacramental, and charismatic traditions. "It's been a great six years," Epps said. "In a survey a few months ago, we discovered that more than 40 percent of the people at Christ the King were not in regular church attendance anywhere prior to coming to be with us. Evidently, we are a good and safe place for people to start over and we are grateful for that." Christ the King meets each Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Carmichael-Hemperley chapel on Ga. Hwy. 74 in Peachtree City while construction continues on the sanctuary in Coweta. For more information, call 770-252-2428. |
