Area churches plan remembrance services for Sept. 11 Several area churches are planning special services next week in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks last year. The Episcopal Church of the Nativity will have an Interfaith Service of Hope and Healing with the Islamic Community Center of Atlanta in Fayetteville on Monday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m. and a Requiem Mass on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. "For us Christians and Muslims to come together in prayer for the hope and healing of our country and of our world is itself a sign of the hope and healing we hunger to experience," said the Rev. Bob Hudak, Vicar of Nativity. "The Requiem Mass will provide an opportunity to give thanks, in particular, for the life of Father Mychal Judge, a Franciscan friar who was killed trying to rescue people from the World Trade Center. "His body was the first body identified after the buildings collapsed," said Hudak. "I was a Franciscan friar for 25 years and knew Mychal well," Hudak added. Hopewell United Methodist in Tyrone will begin its remembrance service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Those who would like to offer names of persons to be remembered during the service are asked to call the church office, 770-306-7537. Hopewell is on Jenkins Rd, in Tyrone. Rolling Hills Baptist Church will present a "God Bless America" prayer and remembrance service beginning at 6:30 p.m. All retired, active duty and reserve armed forces personnel, all law enforcement officers, and all fire and rescue personnel are invited to be a part of the service. Those who would like to participate are asked to call the church office at 770-719-1493. Rolling Hills is at 1481 Redwine Road in Fayetteville First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City will have a reflective and remembrance service Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Don Smith, and the Rev. Sandy Wilmesherr will conduct the service which will include communion and a performance of "God Bless America" by the children's and youth choirs. First Christian Church in Tyrone will have a special service Wednesday at 7 p.m. The service will include patriotic music, a slide presentation focusing on the United States' and Georgia's heritage, patriotic readings, and the opportunity to sign a guest book which will be sent to New York City firemen and policemen. Those attending are encouraged to wear red, white and blue. A flag will be presented to each family. First Christian is at 294 Jenkins Rd. For more information, call 770-969-7346. Peachtree City's recreation department is sponsoring a community-wide remembrance program at 7 p.m. at the amphitheater on McIntosh Trail. The gates will open at 6:30 p.m. for informal community gathering with a more formal ceremony scheduled to begin at 7 p.m Local groups will present patriotic readings and guest performers will provide music and singalongs. Local clergy will read selected pieces appropriate for the occasion. No alcoholic beverages are allowed and no seats may be reserved. Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church will have two worship services of Remembrance, Prayer and Healing Wednesday at 12 noon and 7 p.m. The noon service will include instrumental music by Darla Wilmot, Kathy Rothfusz, music director David Beecher and others. The Rev. David Epps of Christ the King Episcopal Church and the Rev. John Weber of Christ Our Shepherd will be the speakers The evening service will include the instrumental music of the adult hand bell choir, the Martin Rudy Brass Quartet, Don Wilmot, Rothfusz, Beecher and others. Boy Scouts will present the colors and there will be a ballet interpretation of America the Beautiful. The adult choir also will perform. The Rev. Ronald Warren, bishop of the Southeastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Rev. Miriam Beecher of Christ Our Shepherd will be the speakers. Both services will include Holy Communion, music, scripture, readings, and prayers. A slide presentation of remembrance will also be presented. Worship leaders include children, military and airline personnel, Stephen Ministers, and the prayer team. All airline, fire, police, military and medical personnel are invited to come in uniform to honor those who have been on alert on America's behalf. The church is at 101 Peachtree Pkwy. North. (See John Hatcher's column for more details on this service). Harp's Crossing Baptist will have a memorial service at 7 p.m. for adults and children in the first grade or older. Fayetteville First Baptist will have a special Sept. 11 service at 6 p.m. with other regularly scheduled weekly events following. The church is on Stonewall Ave., just off Courthouse Square in Fayetteville. McDonough Road Baptist will have a special time for remembrance during the Sunday, Sept. 8, morning service, and again during regularly scheduled Wednesday activities, Sept. 11.
