Chamber gets United Way pep talk By CAROLYN CARY
Randy Brittain, school superintendent of the Douglas County school system, spoke to the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce. He has been active in the United Way for many years in the state and spoke on the importance of giving time to the agency. Brittain was just named as the Educator of the Year for 2002. "On many occasions I have said, 'If only I had the time, then I would ' I often feel that the pace of life has become too hectic, almost frantic. While growing up I heard promises of a world of more leisure that would result from the technological, economic, and social progress that our society was making. However, in today's world of instant communication, overnight transportation, and constant change, there seems to bel ess time instead. "As school superintendent, I find that there are constant requests for my time. Principals, parents, board members, teachers, students, church, bus drivers, family, custodians, state officials, civic clubs, coaches, fine arts events, all need my time. I must manage my time or become overwhelmed. "We know that our time if filled with the things that we must do and the things that we choose to do. Understanding the difference is the key. "I hope that you take the time to consider the choices you have for the use of your time. "What makes the good time of life your you? One part of the answer to that question for me is the United Way. The United Way provides opportunities to use time in a very important way to help each other. It has been a great partner for the Douglas County School System. Our schools and students have benefited in many ways. We have seen after school programs expand to 20 of our 28 schools, The Communities in Schools program has expanded its impact through collaboration with United Way agencies providing counseling and encouragement for at-risk students. "Giving TIME means that we give ourselves to the cause of the community. Think of this acronym: T - talent, I - influence, M - money, E-emotion. United Way is a wonderful way of making our time count for more." Don Phillips, campaign manager for Fayette County United Way, announced the Pacesetters for 2002. These organizations have agreed to not only increase the total amount of employee giving but also agreed to end its campaign early. They include: Cooper Lighting, Fayette County Government, Fayette Senior Services, Heritage Bank, Southern Community Bank, Florida Rock, and Schachle Benefit Services.
