Students complete governor's honors program Five Fulton County students from Banneker, Creekside, Tri-Cities, and Westlake high schools recently completed the 2002 Georgia Governor's Honors Program. The six-week summer program, held at Valdosta State University, was designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented students opportunities for enriching educational experiences not usually available during the regular school year. Instruction areas included English (communicative arts), foreign languages, mathematics, science, social studies, visual arts, theater, music, dance, commercial and industrial design, technology, executive business management, and agri-science/bio-technology. The program was open to rising 11th and 12th grade students who were first nominated by their teachers and who then competed against more than 2,400 applicants statewide. Local nominees had to pass a school and county interview and then were sent to statewide screening interviews/auditions to earn one of 600 available slots. Each student selected was provided tuition, dormitory housing, and instructional supplies through funds appropriated by the Georgia General Assembly. The 2002 program was in session from June 16 through July 27 on the Valdosta campus. Representing the Fulton County School System in the 2002 Governor's Honors Program were: Kamaria Whitherspoon, Banneker High School, Social Studies. Kai Williamson, Creekside High School, Communicative Arts. Ashley Nicole Johnson, Tri-Cities High School, Dance. Jennifer Johnson, Westlake High School, Science. Travis Nunnally, Westlake High School, Mathematics.
