Second annual Light the Night come s to Peachtree City

Excitement continues to build as The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society recruits for its second annual Light The Night Walk, scheduled to take place on Sept. 14 at Peachtree City's Shakerag Knoll at 6 p.m..

Light The Night is the Society's nationwide evening walk to honor lives touched by cancer. Participants carry illuminated balloonswhite for cancer survivors and red for supportersbrightening the sky along a two to three mile walk in their communities.

This year's Light The Night event promises to benefit from a unique cross promotion. The Society has partnered with Utah-based Mrs. Fields Cookies and NBC's No. 1-rated soap opera, "Days of our Lives," watched daily by more than three million viewers. Mrs. Fields has sponsored a recipe contest called "Winning Is Sweet and So Are the Days of our Lives." The contest winner, to be announced Oct. 5, will receive a walk-on part in the soap opera later this year; the winning cookie will be sold by Mrs. Fields, with a percentage of proceeds going to the Society.

The "Day's of our Lives" story line currently includes a character diagnosed with leukemia, and the Light The Night Walk will figure in the story line in September. NBC will also run public service announcements featuring the soap star, recruiting participants for Light The Night events in communities all over the country. Participants will be able to sign up as part of a walking team named for their favorite Days of our Lives family: the Hortons, the Bradys or the Wesleys.

Pre-and post- Walk celebrations featuring live music and refreshments will be held at Peachtree City's Walk on Sept. 14, adding to the festivities.

Funds raised through individual and corporate contributions support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Individuals and teams of people are welcome. There is no registration fee, but anyone who raises $25 or more will get to carry one of the Society's illuminated balloons. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to honor or remember loved ones by placing their names on special dedication banners.

This year's event is sponsored by Cingular Wireless Georgia Statewide Sponsor
