Dunn: Thanks to voters who checked the facts

I want to thank [Fayette County citizens] for my reelection to the County Commission. Serving you in this capacity has been both satisfying and enlightening. The job is tough but the reward is helping to keep Fayette County the best community in Georgia. I pledge that I will continue to challenge everything and anybody who threatens our quality of life. You can count on it.

I owe special thanks to several groups of citizens.

1. Fayette soccer families. You checked the facts. You were not swayed by the disingenuous information from the executive director of Lightning Soccer. This Conyers resident apparently didn't realize that Fayette citizens would search for the truth. This man placed his "nonprofit" organization in jeopardy by blatantly using his positions for prohibited political purposes. Soccer, and all the other youth sports, will continue to flourish in Fayette County. This one man will not interfere with the continually improving relationship between the county and the recreation associations.

2. Senior citizens. Many of you called and personally asked me if or why I intended to eliminate the school tax exemption for those 65 years of age or older. Some people attempted to deceive you, but you checked it out and found the facts. Seniors have nothing to be worried about. The commissioners have never talked about eliminating tax exemptions for seniors, and you should know that no one could do that to you without a referendum. Causing fear in our senior citizens has been a tactic in national politics many times, but never before in our community elections. Your failure to respond to this attempted deception may prevent desperate politicians from sinking to this level in the future.

3. "Push-poll" recipients. Hundreds of you hung up and expressed outrage at this illegally conducted "polling" which occurred several days prior to the election. You refused to be conned by this consultant-driven tactic. Hopefully, political aspirants have now learned that this type activity has no place in Fayette County elections.

4. Citizens who received last-minute messages from my opponent. My opponent stated he was "pro-life" and implied I was not. Those of you who know me know I am and will always be "pro-life." Many of you were outraged and felt it was a desperate attempt to capture votes at the end, leaving me no time to respond to this political trick. I agree with you.

5. Scores of supporters. Very special thanks to all of you who have worked on this campaign or my previous campaign. You worked hard, you always had faith in me and you lifted me up when the rigors of campaigning might have brought me down. You are a phenomenal, caring and courageous group of hard-working and fun-loving folks who make it all worthwhile.

This campaign saw the introduction of the nasty political activities normally associated with state and national elections. It was indeed unfortunate. However, because Fayette citizens were not influenced by these terrible tactics, we can hope that anyone who has future political aspirations in Fayette County was watching and will establish a standard for their campaign which is worthy of our community where "quality is a lifestyle."

Thank you for renewing my contract for four more years.

Greg Dunn, Chairman

Fayette County Board of Commissioners
