SCAT says goodbye to founder/coach
Southern Crescent Aquatic Team (SCAT) recently said goodbye to its founder and head coach of 11 years. Caren Betts left the team Aug. 1 at the conclusion of the team's long-course season, during which 17 local swimmers qualified for the state championships in more than 100 individual events. SCAT also qualified swimmers to the senior sectional championships and the Southern Zone team. Coach Betts started SCAT in 1991 when she recognized the need for a competitive swim program in the south metro Atlanta area. In that time, she and her staff qualified numerous young swimmers to national, regional and state championship rankings. Under her leadership, SCAT grew from a club of only a few local swimmers to a team of more than 150 swimmers from Fayette, Fulton, Coweta, Douglas and Spalding counties. She was recently recognized as Georgia Age Group Coach of the Year. Coach Betts and her family will be moving to Arizona. Her daughters, Sara and Jessica Betts, coached Peachtree City's summer recreational swim team, the Pacers. Replacing Coach Betts is new head coach Jamey Myers, most recently with Georgia Coastal Aquatic Team (GCAT) in Savannah, when the team resumes its short-course season Sept. 3. Fall registration will continue Saturday from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center. More information regarding SCAT can be found on the team's Web page at www.scatswimming.org.
