Lady Patriots and Chiefs start season on right foot

Sandy Creek's Lady Patriots softball team hosted Woodward Academy last Thursday afternoon and won 3-2.

The two teams were scoreless through the first two innings but Woodward struck in the top of the third, scoring off an error. At the bottom of the third inning Ashleigh Ward drove in Krystal McBride to tie the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning pitcher Beth Jenkins and Laura Mackey both got hits. Their courtesy runners were driven in by a base hit by McBride, giving the Lady Patriots a 3-1 lead. The Lady War Eagles scored in the sixth inning off of another error.

Jenkins completed the game by striking out two Woodward batters in the seventh. She only gave up one hit in the win.

The Lady Patriots faced Douglas County at 5 p.m. yesterday and wil host Fayette County at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow. They will also have a tournament at Meade Field in Peachtree City on Friday and Saturday.

Twenty four teams are expected to attend including Mcintosh, Woodward, Starr's Mill, East Coweta and Newnan among others. Softball action begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.

The McIntosh Lady Chiefs varsity fastpitch softball team beat Eagle's Landing 8-5 in their first game of the season. Junior Lily Yarbrough was on the mound for all seven innings, striking out five batters and allowing only two earned runs as the Lady Chiefs played solid defense.

Offensively, McIntosh had 10 hits off the Eagle's pitcher. Renae Clarke knocked in a run with a double and Lily Yarbrough hit in two RBI's with a double. Caitlin Moran had two hits and an RBI and Kim Bevillard batted in an RBI. Alsion Zelinski and Krosty Cline came on strong with two singles each.

The Lady Chiefs are coached by Stacey Smith and assisted by Toby Black. They faced Lovejoy yesterday.
