Of editors and slugs . . .

The recent opinion column concerning the editor's view on the upcoming elections begs two questions:

1. Where does the editor get the right to refer to the candidates as "slugs"?

2. Why does he assume that any thinking person would be interested in his opinion or choices?

What a shame it is that we do not get to elect editors.

S. Neff

Peachtree City

[The editor replies: As to Question 1, reader Neff misunderstands my usage of "slugs," which is meant to refer to a long list or a large quantity of names from which to make a choice, as in "a slug of type." But the editor admits to being a slug of sorts for his lack of clarity. As to Question 2, reader Neff has hit the slug on the head. As to reader Neff's conclusion, I might argue that you already have the power of "unelecting" me and my assumptions, at your fingertips, every time the paper arrives. Alas, no such luck with a real, elected politician. You can throw my opinions in the trash can. The politician's opinions get turned into law.]
