ARC: Fayette's growth slow compared to other metro Atlanta counties

Preliminary results from the Atlanta Regional Commission's metro Atlanta population estimates show that Fayette County is one of the slowest-growing in the area. The ARC estimates that Fayette added another 2,800 residents between April 1, 2001 and April 1, 2002, just under the county's average yearly change for the past 10 years. Of the 10 counties in the metro area, Fayette's slow growth pace was only surpassed by Rockdale County, whose growth projection was for only 600 new residents compared to Fayette's 2,800. Not far behind was Douglas County, which grew by an estimated 2,900 residents during the same time frame. Fulton County, by comparison, added a projected 11,900 residents while Gwinnett County topped the projection charts with an additional 24,300 residents. The figures are not official until they are adopted by the ARC Board, which is slated to discuss the issue at its meeting Wednesday, Aug. 28. The study also included the City of Atlanta, including Atlanta's jurisdictions that are partially in DeKalb and Fulton Counties. The ARC estimates calculate that the Atlanta region has grown by over 80,000 persons from last year to this year, a 2.3 percent growth rate.
