Dale Murphy appearing in Lilburn Former National League All-Star Dale Murphy will be returning to the Atlanta area, the scene of his greatest baseball triumphs, Saturday for a special "Fireside" talk in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' Stake Center in Lilburn. The program will run from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and will also feature Elder Gene R. Cook, president of the LDS Church's North America Southeast Area. The Lilburn Stake Center is located at 1150 Cole Dr. in Lilburn, at the corner of Cole Dr. and Five Forks Trickum, next to Parkview High School. Unquestionably the best known of the 50-plus members of the LDS Church who have played major league baseball, Murphy played for the Atlanta Braves from 1976 to 1990, the Philadelphia Phillies from 1990-1992 and the Colorado Rockies in 1993 before retiring due to chronic knee problems. The Aug. 17 "Fireside" will include Murphy sharing the story of his conversion to the church in 1975, a tale that involves former Brave and LDS member Barry Bonnell, an eight-hour, all-night bus ride through North and South Carolina and the Book of Mormon. Known as "The Nicest Guy in Baseball" during his playing days, Murphy lived in Grantville and was a member of the Newnan Ward during the latter part of his playing career. Since retiring from baseball he has been busy in church service, having served a three-year mission as president of the Church's Massachusetts Boston Mission.
