Local youth excels at judo

July was a fine month for 10-year-old Derek Wojcik from Tyrone. This rising fifth-grader from Tyrone Elementary has entered two national competitions and the Georgia State Games in the sport of judo, where he has yielded some impressive results.

Wojcik, who stands 4-feet-10 and competes in the 84-pound division, has been studying judo since he was three years old. He began his assault in Florida at the USJA Nationals where he finished in third place.

From there Wojcik went to Augusta to compete in the Georgia State Games. He went 6-0 and won two gold medals in two separate weight classes, one in whih he gave up 33 pounds to his opponent.

Wojcik then traveled to Indianapolis to compete in the Junior Olympics where he took home a silver medal, losing in the finals to another athlete from Georgia.

Wojcik's father, Dave, teaches judo and jiujitsu classes for the Peachtree City Parks and Recreation Department. The classes take place at the Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center on Mondays and Thursdays and are open to those ages three to adult. Phone Cajen Rhodes at 770-631-2525 for more information.
