Mud Dogs win World Series
The Fayette Mud Dogs 11-year-old baseball team recently completed its season by winning the International Baseball Championship World Series in Clearwater, Fla. The Mud Dogs were 7-0 at the weeklong World Series and beat the Gresham Park, Ga., Scorpions in the championship game 7-0. They gave up only 17 runs in the seven games. Brennan May of the Mud Dogs was named World Series Most Valuable Player and Miles Head was awarded the World Series Gold Glove. Other Mud Dogs chosen for the World Series All-Tournament Team were Chris Ward, Kyle Hirschfeld, Cody McCollum, Joey Costello and Colin Mallon. The Mud Dogs finished the 2002 season with 63 wins. They were the undefeated 11/12 league champions in Fayetteville, AABC district champions, and one of only three teams comprised solely of 11-year-olds to qualify for the Georgia AABC 11/12 state tourney. In addition, the Mud Dogs were either champions or runners-up in five other tournaments throughout the year. Team members are Andrew Austin, Freeman Bass, Joey Costello, Miles Head, Kyle Hirschfeld, Drew Johnson, Brennan May, Colin Mallon, Cody McCollum, Cameron Pruitt, and Chris Ward. Coaches are Greg Hirschfeld, Steve Costello, Mark Ward, and Ron May.
