NCT presents rollicking comedy "I Hate Hamlet" By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
"I Hate Hamlet." That sentiment may be invoked by thousands of high school students each year as they study the Bard's famous tragedy but it is also the title of Newnan Community Theatre's new production, which will run Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 24. "I Hate Hamlet" is written by Paul Rudnick who penned the scripts for "Addams Family Values," "In and Out," and "Jeffrey." The play focuses on a soap opera star who gets hired to do "Hamlet" in the park. The star fears the daunting role and summons the spirit of John Barrymore, a former tenant of his apartment, for advice on the role. He gets the advice on the role of the troubled dane but also gets advice on acting and life. Add to the mix a psychic real estate broker, a 29-year-old virgin, swordfights and more and you have a hilarious comedy. The cast of the play is Jeff Allen as soap star Andrew Rally, Michael McClendon as John Barrymore, Kelly Whisenhunt as Deirdre McDavey, Heather Carson as Felicia Dantine, Ginger McMichael as Lillian and Bert Lyons as Gary Peter Lefkowitz. The show is directed by David Dorell who directed "The Fantasticks" for Newnan Community Theatre last year. He was also the Pirate King at this year's Georgia Renaissance Festival. "I Hate Hamlet" will be presented Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.
