Gallopade International has new series of books about "Heroes and Helpers" By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
After Sept. 11, the word "hero" took on new meaning. Instead of famous movie stars or athletes, heroes were now firefighters and police officers, men and women who put their life on the line on an everyday basis in order to protect others. Gallopade International, an educational publisher based in Peachtree City, has a new series of books for children about everyday heroes called "Heroes and Helpers." The series, written by Peachtree City and Savannah resident Carole Marsh, includes 12 "Adventure Diaries," which are accompanied by "Careers Book for Kids," "Heroes and Helpers: Those We Count on Every Day and In Times of Crisis," "Heroes and Helpers Activity Book," "Heroes and Helpers Coloring Book" and "Heroes and Helpers Teacher and Parent Resource Book." Marsh founded Gallopade Publishing Group in 1979 and is the author of more than 10,000 books. She is the CEO of Gallopade International, which was named the fastest growing small press in 2000 by Publisher Weekly. The "Adventure Diaries" are 48 pages long and feature an insider look into the day-to-day lives of emergency response workers, volunteers, members of the military and other important heroes and helpers. Some of the books in the series include "The Perils of Pauline the Police Officer," "Felipe the Fearless Firefighter," "Li, the Excellent EMT," and "Dharma the Dedicated Doctor." "We wanted to choose professions that kids were seeing in the news everyday," said Marsh. "We also wanted to let them know more about the heroes they see every day." "The Career Book for Kids" explains and examines human service careers and weighs the pros and cons of each profession. It also explains to children how to prepare for a career in those particular fields. "Heroes and Helpers: Those We Count on Every Day and In Times of Crisis" goes into detail of the lives of real heroes and helpers and the "Heroes and Helpers Coloring Book" is aimed at younger children giving them patterns, crafts, recipes, games and rewards. Gallopade International has some other new releases including "The Day That Was Different: September 11, 2001 - When America Was Attacked by Terrorists" and "United We Stand: America's War Against Terrorism." "After Sept. 11, we knew that kids would have a million questions, these books try to answer all of the questions and find a positive among all the negatives. The silver lining of Sept. 11 is the community helpers, the people." In the next three months, Gallopade will release some new books including a 20th anniversary re-release of "The Mystery of the Biltmore House" in September, "Orville and Wilbur Wright Sep out into the Sky" in October and a biography on Mayor Shirley Franklin in November. |
