Pioneers end season with wins at Georgia Games

The SouthSide Pioneers took a trip to Cross Creek High School in Augusta recently to compete in the 2002 Georgia Games Youth Track and Field Championships. Thirty-three team members went up against over 500 athletes. Those who won gold, silver or bronze medals qualified for the 2003 State of Games of America in Hartford, Conn. next August.

First place winners for the Pioneers were Joy Ferrell in the high jump, 1.30m; Najee Pace in the running long jump, 4.08m; Mellany Stanislaus in the triple jump, 9.75m; Anthony Williams in the high jump, 1.05m; Tina Williams in the 200m, 31.84 and the 400m, 1:13.74. The 4x100m relay team of Joshua McCrary, Auston Childs, Donovan Herring and Mitch Sargent also took first place, defeating the top seeded Mercury Heat with a time of 44.31.

Second place winners were the 4x100m relay team of Jonathan Manning, Terry Williams, Anthony Williams and Najee Pace with a time of 1:08.50; the 4x100m relay team of Michael Manning, David Mathis, Chris Manning and Vince Brown with a time of 59.50; Vince Brown in the 800m, 2:31.38; Canesha Edwards in the 400m, 1:05.60; Joy Ferrell in the 80m hurdles with a time of 15.15 and Khaneisha Pagan in the 110m hurdles with a time of 18.54.

Third place winners were Canesha Edwards in the running long jump, 3.95m; Joy Ferrell in the 800m, 3:11.10; Brandon Lee in the 110m hurdles, 19.19; the 4x100m relay team of Brandon Lee, Jonathan Johnson, D.J. Wright and Quinta Starr with a time of 53.16; the 4x100m relay team and the 4x400m relay team of Iman Person, Khaneisha Pagan, Mellany Stanislaus and Jessi Brown with times of 53.35 and 4:36.58; the 4x400m relay team of Jonathan Johnson, Zach Lethbridge, Stephen Pline and Quinta Starr with a time of 3:56.45 and the 4x400m relay team of McCrary, Childs, Herring and Sargent with a time of 3:36.19.

Other individual competitors who placed were Edwards, fourth in the 200m, 28.36; Herring, fourth in the triple jump, 12.17m and fourth in the 110m hurdles, 16.15; Lethbrdige, fourth in the 1,500m 4:49.29 and seventh in the 800m, 2:20.19; McCrary, fourth in the high jump, 1.75m; Lisa Williams, fourth in the 1,500m, 6:50.36 and seventh in the 800m, 3:23.50; Wright, fourth in the 110m hurdles, 20.47; Ferrell, fifth in the running long jump, 3.77m; Olivia Fisher, fifth in the 1,500m, 6:50.86 and eighth in the 800m, 3:23.54; Manning, fifth in the 100m, 14.87; James Mathis, fifth in the javelin thrown, 20.18m and twelfth in the 800m, 2:57.71; Sargent, fifth in the 400m, 52.29; Joshua White, fifth in the 110m hurdles, 22.03; Brown, sixth in the 80m hurdles, 17.07; Nicole Mathis, sixth in the shot put, 2.89m and ninth in the running long jump, 2.89m; Starr, sixth in the 100m, 11.88 and seventh in the 200m, 24.02; Jana Manning, seventh in the 100m, 17.89; Pline, seventh in the 1,500m, 5:01.22 and tenth in the 800m, 2:30.80, Joel Stanislaus, eighth in the running long jump, 3.22m and Eric Williams, seventh in his heat in the 400m qualifier, 1:29.

The SouthSide Pioneers had a stellar inaugural season as a competitive multi-county summer track team. They will send six members to the AAU National Championship in Knoxville, Tenn this August. The team is open to youth ages 8-29, young adults ages 19-29 for the USATF Open Division and athletes over the age of 30 for the USATF Master's Division. For more information, phone 770-719-4664.
