Rep. Collins' vote on trucking bill was a conflict of interest

The below message was e-mailed to Congressman Mac Collins July 28.

Congressman Collins:

During the past years that you have represented the 3rd District, I have usually been in agreement with your actions. However, as of late, I am growing more and more opposed to some of your votes.

Recently, you introduced and managed to get passed legislation concerning trucking companies. This legislation will delay, for at least another year, much-needed action that would have reduced pollution from trucks (tractors). Your bill is totally unacceptable as these trucks contribute to a large degree to the air pollution in this country.

Even worse, your two sons and you own and operate a trucking company, and will be monetarily affected by this legislation. Without your bill, trucking companies would have incurred several thousand dollars additional for modified engines.

You are guilty of a conflict of interest as this bill directly affects the costs associated with your family business. Your family company is contributing to air pollution. In my opinion, your bill is a violation of Congressional ethics.

This message will be forwarded to The Citizen and other papers. The public has a right to know about your trucking company bill. In fairness, your answer to this message will also be forwarded to the media. May I suggest that you present an appeal to this bill without delay?
