Girl Scouts get awards old-fashioned way

I would like to take issue with your paper, The Citizen, and two of the articles in the June 19 issue regarding the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. On Page 4A, you have a headline that reads, "Four earn Eagle Scout award" while on Page 10A the headline reads, "Fayette County Girl Scouts win gold."

As a member of the Girl Scout organization for over 25 years and a Gold Award recipient ('86), let me educate your staff in this issue.

These and all of the other Girl Scout Gold Award recipients have never won their awards. Just like the Boy Scouts, we have EARNED our award. It took a certain number of badges, volunteer service hours, and a huge main project for us to even be considered to carry around the honor of earning this award.

Indeed our organization has revised itself for almost a century now so the Gold Award and Silver Award is not as well recognized as the Eagle Award. However, it still takes as much work and dedication to earn this prestigious award and recognized as one of the best in our sisterhood.

If you and your staff need further information on this award or the Girl Scout organization, I am sure our public relations contact at the local council office (Pine Valley Girl Scouts) would be happy to fill in anything that I have not addressed.

Now that you have been properly informed of the significance of this award, I would appreciate it if your paper would give the same amount of respect and coverage of this award as you have reserved for our male counterparts.
