Farmers, bring us your best

I left my house this morning mouth watering, with anticipation of tables full of fresh, homegrown peaches, blackberries, fresh-baked bread, bell peppers, sweet onions, butter beans and crowder peas, squash, bright flowers and more.

You see, where I come from they have a Farmer's Market Day the first and last Saturday of every month in the summer, and the fruit of the soil is to die for!

So, needless to say I was terribly disappointed when I arrived to find wilting plants, mass produced, store-bought cakes being resold, only one person selling home baked bread (thank you very much, by the way), and the only veggies were green tomatoes and the only fruit a pile of watermelons.

The crowd was not bad for a holiday weekend, so I have to ask: Hey, all you local farmers, where are you? You are missing out on a great opportunity to not only sell your gifts from the earth, but to also meet your neighbors.

Those of us who have busy schedules, too much overtime, too many ball games to attend and kids to entertain during the summer we count on you to bring us the good, old-fashioned fresh fruits and veggies we all long for, but don't have the time to grow ourselves.

So please, next month come on in to Fayetteville and show us your stuff!
