Will Wheat's vision for Fayette be same as F'ville?

I was amused by Mike Wheat's communication director's call for discussion of the issues vs. attacks by supporters of Greg Dunn.

Ms. [Meredith] Wynn then goes on to seemingly blame Greg Dunn for the loss of 800 jobs (didn't mention out of how many employed). I guess Greg should have prevented the nationwide recession and even 9-11 with its resultant impact on the airline industry. Greg, your opponent would have done something about this (according to Ms. Wynn)!

But let's talk about the issues, such as the land use plan and controlled growth as viewed by Dunn and Wheat.

Greg Dunn and Linda Wells were voted in four years ago certainly in part because of their promise to slow uncontrolled growth permitted by their predecessors. The reduced growth of the last few years suggests considerable success in their efforts to satisfy the demands of Fayette residents.

The former mayor of Fayetteville, Mike Wheat, is now running on a campaign pledge to follow the land use plan and to slow growth for the county.

But what is Mike Wheat's record? Yes, in his tenure as mayor, for eight years (1991-1999), the mayor participated in at least 35 different annexations, almost all of which resulted in major increases in density or commercial projects for the city.

Does the former mayor talk about these accomplishments, and his concern about controlling growth and following a land use plan while mayor of Fayetteville? Who deserves the credit for the "beautiful" Riverdale-like city of Fayetteville, [if not] Mike Wheat? Is his vision for the county the same as his [for] Fayetteville?

Based on the last 10 years, I wonder who the builders and developers are more likely to support, Greg Dunn or Mike Wheat?

This is a far more important election on Aug. 20 than I believe most voters recognize. With just a small number of voters likely to turn out, they will decide whether we go back to the past, or continue to look to the future. Your vote for Greg Dunn and Linda Wells is important!
