Graphics students attend national competition

Four McIntosh High School graphic arts students recently participated in the 38th annual National Skills USA-VICA Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, MO. The students had qualified to advance to nationals by placing first in state competition earlier this year.

A team of three students, seniors Michael Amosu and Shawn Tupper and sophomore Whitney Hanlon, placed fourth out of 39 entries in the Promotional Bulletin Board competition.

The competition consisted of designing and constructing a buletin board promoting the Skills USA-VICA organization, preparing a notebook about the board, and making a speech before the judges. This is the third consecutive year that MHS has competed in this category in Kansas City, having previously placed sixth and eleventh in national standings.

Ankia DuPreez competed in the Photography competition which involved one day of shooting film and an eight-hour contest the following day covering written and hands on activities in many facets of photography. Photography is an interest DuPreezhas pursued during her two years in the MHS Graphics program and hopes to continue to pursue as she goes on to college.

In addition to entering the Promotional Bulletin Board contest, Whitney and Shawn were selected to serve on the National Courtesy Corps where they volunteered 8-10 hours per day for six days to assist in the running of the conference.

SkillsUSA-VICA is a national organization serving more than a quarter-million high school and college students and professional members who are enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations.

Contests in 73 skill and leadership development areas were judged at the event by representatives of business, industry, labor, and education.
