Pioneers have several AAU region champions

The SouthSide Pioneers competed in the AAU Regional Championships last weekend and had several members finish the meet as AAU Regional Champions and several more will head to the national meet. First through fourth place finishers qualify for the national meet. Peachtree City's Emma Lee took first place in the shot put with a throw of 9' to become a champion in the Primary Girls division. Tina Williams placed first in the 200 meter (31.00) and the 400 meter (1:11.00) to become a regional champ in the Primary Girls division as well. Williams will attempt to break the national record of 1:09 in the AAU National Meet in Knoxville in August. William's sister Lisa took second place in the Sub Bantam Girls 1,500 meter with a time of 6:02. Quinta Starr took second place in the running long jump with a jump of 6.03 meters in the Intermediate Boys division, while his teammate Stephen Pline finished fourth in the 3,000 meter with a personal record of 11:00. Olivia Fisher finished fourth in the 1,500 meters with a personal record of 7:02 in the Bantam Girls division, while Joy Ferrell finished in fourth place in both the pentathlon and the high jump (1.25m). Ferrell also finished a close fifth in the running long jump (3.77m) in the Midget Girls division. Najee Pace also finished fifth in the running long jump (11') in the Bantam Boys division. Donovan Herring, who set a personal record in the qualifying heats of the Young Men's 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.09, placed seventh in the finals. The Pioneers will compete in the USATF Regional Junior Olympics in Richmond, Va. July 11-14. On Monday, July 8 they will receive the 2002 Georgia Games Torch Run Local Team Championship Award for Sportsmanship and for being a positive example in the community. The ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Griffin Courthouse in Griffin, Ga. This will kick off the 2002 Georgia Games Youth Track and Field Championships, which will take place in Augusta, Ga. July 19 and 20.
