Dunn managed growth, but look at Wheat's F'ville

In the county elections four years ago, the citizens of Fayette County sent a clear message that they wanted slow, managed, growth, honest government, and county commissioners who respected the rights and views of all, not just the land speculators and developers who seemed to control the county at that time.

Under the leadership of Greg Dunn and our current county commissioners, honesty and fairness have been restored to our county government. The land use plan again has meaning and citizens feel free to speak out at meetings without fear of being thrown out for disagreeing with a commissioner.

I may not always agree with Commissioner Dunn, but he will listen to my concerns and he does care deeply about this country and the quality of life we currently enjoy.

In a recent mail-out announcing his candidacy for the commissioner post now held by Greg, Mike Wheat lists several issues and positions and cites his accomplishments during his reign as mayor of Fayetteville from 1991 to 1999. However, Mr. Wheat failed to mention one of his major accomplishments the fact that during his stewardship, the city of Fayetteville became pretty much a carbon copy of Riverdale.

He accomplished this by presiding over 30-plus separate annexations and untold rezonings. As a result of this leap of un-managed growth, we now have more people and more businesses in less space, traffic that is near gridlock at times, a significant increase in crime and the quality of life in our county has been greatly diminished. This un-managed growth and accompanying demand for additional services, including a new jail, has also resulted in higher taxes for all of us.

So when you go to the polls on Aug. 20, you have a very clear choice. If you want Fayette County to revert back to the "good old boys, anything goes" way of doing business of the '90s and the land use plan becomes only a suggestion, then vote for Mike Wheat.

However, if you feel comfortable with the fair and ethical way our county government is now being run, I recommend you vote for Greg Dunn.

Darrell McKinney
