Coweta will see some new faces after Nov. election By JOHN
THOMPSON
When the dust settles after the November 5 election, Coweta County residents will see a changing of the guard on the County Commission and Board of Education. Last week, County Commission Chairman Jim McGuffey announced he would not seek reelection to his 2nd District post. "I have had to think long and hard about not running again. Deciding not to seek reelection was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. However, I have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to do other things, including serving my family full-time," he said. Three candidates seeking McGuffey's post are Democrat John Houston of Grantville and Republicans Jeffery Estep of Newnan, Richard Hodges of Newnan and Gregory Tarbutton of Newnan. In the 3rd District commission race, incumbent Lawrence Nelms faces opposition from Democrat Willie Pritchett Jr. of Newnan and Republicans Larry DeMoss of Newnan and former Commissioner Charlie Jones of Newnan. The school board will also see a changing of the guard, since earlier this year, Chairman Bill Covington announced he would not be seeking reelection. Two candidates are vying for Sumner's 4th District post Brian Roy of Newnan and Blair Walker of Sharpsburg. Incumbents Mike Sumner and Smith Pass face no opposition in their races, while incumbent Steve Bedrosian faces off against Ted Bateman Sr. of Haralson. All the school board races are nonpartisan. Coweta County will be represented by four different house districts after the election. In House District, 86, Lynn Westmoreland faces no opposition. Newnan's Lynn Smith also faces no opposition for her District 87 post. In District 88, Post 1 incumbent Tracey Stallings faces opposition from Mark Butler of Carrollton. In new House District 88, Post 2, Democrat Fred O'Neal of Carrollton faces off against fellow Democrat Tom Parmer of Carrolton and Republican Chuck Harper of Carrolton. Republican Jeff Brown faces no opposition in his District 89 post. In the State Senate, Republican Mitch Seabaugh of Sharpsburg faces no opposition for his District 28 post. In District 29, incumbent Democrat Dan Lee of LaGrange faces opposition from Democrat Evelyn Thompson of Grantville. Incumbent Republican Bill Hamrick of Carrollton faces no opposition for his District 30 post. In the races for Congressional seats, incumbent Republican Mac Collins of Jackson faces off against Angelos Petrakopoulous of Duluth for the new District 8 seat. A portion of Coweta will also be represented in the new 11th District. Democrats Buddy Darden of Marietta and Roger Kahn of Rydal will face-off in the Aug. 20 primary and the winner will face one of three Republicans in November. Republicans seeking the position are Phil Gingrey of Marietta, Bob Herriott of Marietta and Cecil Stanton of Rome. The primary election is set for Aug. 20 and the general election is Nov. 5.
