Youth ballet's hard work to be showcased Friday

Imagine having a choice between swimming with your friends or dancing six to eight hours a day and aching all over. Faced with such a choice, the members of the Georgia Youth Ballet have chosen dance, dance and more dance.

The Fayetteville home of Georgia Youth Ballet, The Studio, sponsored a workshop during the month of June featuring guest teachers and dancers from all over the world.

The workshop started with guest teacher Thom Clower of New York. After a grueling week filled with Clower's famous abdominal crunches, Julianne Kepley of Atlanta Ballet came for a week. To sum up one dancer's sentiments, "Julianne is hard."

Next Viktor Yeliohin of the Ukraine came for two weeks. Yeliohin is a master teacher touring all over the United States. Jessica Mylene, former principal dancer with Atlanta Ballet and Cincinnati Ballet, came to teach the last week.

The GYB dancers have learned several dance combinations and variations during this month. They have put together a performance that includes classical ballet, neo-classical ballet, "surfin ballet," a new ballet choreographed by Yeliohin, the Fairy Variation from "A Midsummer Night's dream" and even fun "fruit salad" dances.

Everyone is invited to attend the summer workshop performance on Friday, June 28 at 7:30 p.m. at our Lady of Mercy High School in Fayetteville. All tickets are free. Phone The Studio at 770-716-9858 for more information.
