Pioneers send athletes to regional meet

The SouthSide Pioneers competed in the USATF Georgia Association Championship meet in Hiram, Ga. last weekend. Team member Tina Williams, a third grade homeschooler from Riverdale, set the meet ablaze by becoming the youngest team athlete to take first place in two events.

Williams ran the 400 meter in a time of 1:16.17, which was a personal record. Before she ran the 200 meter she spoke with Coach Richard Clark, changed her running style, and became the USATF Junior Olympic state champion in the 200 meter with a time of 32.33. She will now compete in the USATF Junior Olympic regional meet in Sportsbacker Stadium in Richmond, Va., July 11-14.

Other top five competitors advancing to the regional meet were Emma Lee, second place in the shot put, 2.81 meters; Najee Pace, third place in the running long jump, 12'9"; and the 4x100 meter relay team of Brandon Lee, Jonathan Johnson, J.R. Rea and Quinta Starr, 46.44.

Starr and Joy Ferrell both had close sixth place finishes in the running long jump. Ferrell also had a close sixth place finish in the high jump. Stephen Pline set a Pioneers record with a sixth place finish in the 3,000 meter with a time of 11:09.83, while Joshua White, 18.34, and Matt Harlfinger, 16.51, set records in the 110 meter hurdles.

The young men's 4x100 meter relay team of Auston Childs, Donovan Herring, Mitch Sargent and Harlfinger finished in seventh place but set a team record with a time of 44.60.

Other Pioneers who made their debut in the USATF Junior Olympics State Championship meet were Jessi and Vince Brown, Olivia Fisher, Chris and Michael Manning, David and James Mathis, Joshua McCrary, Rachel Menefee, Jessica Owen, Khaneisha Pagan, Iman Person and Mellany Stanislaus.

The SouthSide Pioneers will compete at the AAU Regional Championship meet at Savannah State University in Savannah, Ga. this weekend. The team also competes in the Peachtree City Running Club All-Comers Meets in peachtree City on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the new track off Ga. Hwy 74.
