Tyrone councilman raises questions

I'm not sure how Commissioner Pfeifer took the facts that I presented to Mr. Beverly and The Citizen as a personal attack, unless he has a problem with the people of this county being informed with the truth. At no time in that article did I attack him or other members of the current County Commission. My letter was an attempt to clear up the accusation by The Citizen that Tyrone continues to "annex, annex, annex." In his response, he stated that my story was "incomplete, leaving out important details." I challenge him to show where any of the details of my article were false or incomplete. I also want to know if he has read the county document that I referred to entitled "Highway 74 Corridor Sewer Study." I would assume he has taken the time to "dig" into the study. I also hope that he has gotten a copy or even asked for a copy for himself. And while he is "digging" maybe he could inform the rest of the county citizens and myself, how much was spent to compile this study?

As far as his assertion that for me to believe that the current group of commissioners would find 2,270 apartments "acceptable" to them as being "hilarious," well Commissioner Pfeifer needs to realize that two of the current group were sitting members of the commission in 1995 when this study was requested. Also the current county attorney and county engineering consultant were sitting in place when this study was compiled and requested in 1995 by the former county administrator. So I believe he can understand Tyrone's concern over this study. But he already knows that because he has a copy of the study and he has read it, right?

I would also like for the commissioner to tell me what part of the information concerning the sewer issue was "a bit incomplete, leaving out important details, as well as misleading?" I assume he is up to date with this matter. The best I can remember, he was politically involved when this matter was on the table. What information could he have concerning this matter? I'm sure he knows the county did nothing to support Tyrone to fight the development of the spray application system, even though the placement of the spray field was environmentally irresponsible. But if he has read the study, he would notice the county also planned to place a field in this exact area.

I don't understand how the commissioner can take the response that I made to The Citizen and twist it into a personal matter. He attempts to attack me, but I'm the same person that he approached and requested my support to help get him elected. I refused to support him and explained to him why. And my fears of having him as a commissioner are exactly what I envisioned it would be. I had been informed that he was the "hand picked boy" and he has done nothing to prove this wrong. Even after touting himself as a fiscal conservative in the election, he cast the tiebreaking vote to raise our taxes via assessed values and a millage rate increase.

So since he thinks I've made this a personal matter, I want to inform him that I have decided to designate him as my "personal commissioner." I have some questions that I have asked two of his fellow commissioners and as of yet have not received an answer. So knowing how well he "digs" this should be a relatively easy task for him. And if he would please respond to my questions with answers in this paper. I think the people of this county should know the answers during this very important election year.

1. When was the vote taken to sue Tyrone over the sewer issue? I have researched the meeting minutes on the county's web site and have not been able to find this information.

2. Was the vote taken in a meeting open to the public?

3. What was the vote? Who voted in favor to sue Tyrone and who not to sue?

4. How much did the county incur in legal expenses to pursue this unsuccessful action?

5. If it was such an important issue to the commission, why didn't any of the commissioners bother to show up for the hearings? Why was neither the county attorney, the assistant county attorney or the assistant-assistant county attorney present but instead a real estate lawyer? Was it because the county knew the outcome was hopeless? Then why not dismiss the case?

There's a great difference between commissioner Pfeifer and myself. According to the bio on him on the county's web site, he has spent many years involved in politics. He has obviously mastered the art of spinning the details to mislead people. He is a true "politician." There lies the difference. I don't mind laying the information out there for everyone to see. Why should information be hidden from the public? Why not be open with the people and lay the true facts on the table? It's the constant deception that government practices that makes the public not trust their elected officials. And why does commissioner Pfeifer jump to the defense when I was just giving the press a response to an editorial that had some incorrect information?

Well I've got some news for commissioner Pfeifer. I will fight until the last day of my term of office to defend Tyrone against attacks from the press, developers, the county or even other governments. If he has a problem with that, then he does have a personal problem it's me.

Ronnie Cannon

Tyrone Town Councilman
