The Tough Get Going

You know the saying, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going?" Well, that definitely sums up this past weekend for the Camp Fire USA Georgia Council team. We finished second on Sunday at Wisconsin International Raceway (WIR) - a track that I had never raced on. It is tough to get a handle on WIR. The odd shape of the racetrack isn't like anything that I had ever been on, and experience definitely provided an edge. In fact, this year's winning team also won the two other ASA events held at that track. All in all, the Steve Dale Motorsports team was really pleased with our second-place finish.

The challenge of the racetrack was multiplied by the fact that I just didn't feel 100 percent. I had been sick all of last week and I struggled during the race on Sunday. Just when I thought that I was going to have trouble making it to the end, my car owner (Steve Dale) and crew chief (Bond Suss) got on the radio with words of encouragement. Lap for lap the crew kept cheering me on and that really made all the difference for me. I have never been so happy to see the checkered flag.

Because our next race is this Sunday at Elko (Minnesota) Speedway, the team has decided to spend the week up here. We will be using the time testing for an upcoming race and preparing for this weekend's event. Elko Speedway will be another new track for most of the team and me. Luckily, Bond is from Minnesota and he knows that facility. Hopefully his experience will give an edge over the competition.

Well, I guess that's it. Be sure to check out the racing action live this Sunday on The National Network (TNN) beginning at 2:00 p.m. EDT.

Have a great week!

Joey Clanton
