Hilde Fox tennis tournament a smashing success

For the sixth year in a row, friends and teammates of the late Hilde Fox hosted the Hilde Fox Memorial Tennis Tournament to benefit the Clayton College & State University Athletics Associates, Inc., and also for the sixth year in a row, support and participation in the event grew even larger.

This year the tournament drew over 85 women for the event and raised approximately $5,000 for the CCSU Lady Laker tennis program, up from $1,200 in the tourney's first year in 1997. The tourney was played May 20-22 at the South Fulton Tennis Complex.

"This is our sixth one, and it keeps getting bigger each year," said tournament organizer and Athletic Association, Inc. member Elizabeth Barfield, of Fayetteville. "Hilde was a great supporter of Clayton State tennis, and this is a wonderful way to remember her."

A former resident of Rex, G., and an avid tennis player and supporter of the Lady Lakers, Fox, 54, died in 1996.

June Taylor, Hampton, and Joyce Peak, Conyers, defeated Val Herendeen, Douglasville, and Molly Shepard, Newnan, in the "AA" finals, while Pam Wallace, Newnan, and Sam Maddock, Gay, defeated Joyce Davis, Barnesville, and Alice Crayton, Zebulon, in the "A" finals.

In the "B" finals, Theresa Griswell, McDonough, and Carol Corban, McDonough, defeated Nancy Beavers, Stockbridge, and Nancy Bernardi, Jonesboro. Griswell and Corban have played in the tournament since it originated in 1997. Sara Lithgow, McDonough, and Wilma Cameron, McDonough, won the "C" division and Sara Rainey, McDonough, and Mary Annette Salpietra, McDonough, placed second in the division.
