Red Cross issues emergency appeal for blood donors

Blood is being rationed and surgeries may be cancelled because blood supplies all over the country are drastically low.

American Red Cross Southern Region blood collections last week fell 300 pints short of the 1,200 needed each day to supply Georgia's hospital needs. Meanwhile, national supplies continued to decline at less than a day's supply for critically important type O negative blood making importing blood from other areas difficult.

The Red Cross is asking for donors of all types to come in the next several days to help.

A local blood drive will be held Thursday, June 13, at Fayette Community Hospital, 1265 W. Hwy. 54, Fayetteville, 12-5 p.m.

Donors can also give at donor centers around the metro area:

· Monroe Drive Donor Center 1925 Monroe Drive, Atlanta, GA 30324

· Cobb Donor Center 2179 Roswell Road, Marietta, GA 30062

· Alpharetta Donor Center 3000 Old Alabama Road, Alpharetta, GA 30022

· Duluth Donor Center 3090 Premiere Parkway, Duluth, GA 30097

Centers are open 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday, and 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday. Monroe Drive and Cobb will be open 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday as well.

The American Red Cross Blood Services Southern Region serves about 140 hospitals and healthcare facilities. Most healthy people age 17 or older, who weigh at least 110 pounds, can donate blood.
